• Choosing a Gas Fireplace - Part 1 of 2
If you’re thinking about including a gas fireplace in your homebuilding plans, or adding one to your existing home, read on. You may know already that once a gas fireplace is added to your list of desired amenities, it’s usually there to stay. And you’re not alone. According to the National Association of Homebuilders, fireplaces are one of the top three features new homeowners request.

When purchasing a gas fireplace, it’s smart to do your research. This two-part blog series will walk you through the basics, helping you to choose the best gas fireplace for your lifestyle and home.

    Gas Fireplaces 101
Gas fireplaces are factory-built fireboxes with specialized venting systems that can be direct vented or unvented. Direct vent gas fireplaces are the most popular because they are convenient and safe, with sealed combustion systems that protect indoor air quality by drawing outside air for the fire and expelling 100% of combustion exhaust and byproducts outside the home. Unvented gas fireplaces are open systems that draw upon indoor air for the fire, consuming oxygen while expelling exhaust and byproducts (carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, moisture) into the home. Unvented gas fireplaces are not legal in some areas of the U.S., and many hearth retailers don’t sell them due to safety, moisture and condensation issues.

    A Myriad of Styles
Direct vent gas fireplaces are available in many designs, ranging from traditional to modern, and even ultra-modern. You can find the style and size fireplace to perfectly complement your home. There are even see-through gas fireplaces that can be enjoyed on two sides of the same wall (in two rooms, or even inside and outside of a home)! We have many options for gas fireplaces.

    Benefits
Operated by the flip of a switch or remote control, direct vent gas fireplaces offer the greatest convenience of all hearth products. Because they burn natural gas or liquid propane, there is no ash to clean up and maintenance is minimal. When used as zone heaters to reduce energy costs, direct vent gas fireplaces can pay for themselves in a matter of a few years.

But wait, there’s more next week! Watch for Part 2 of this series, when we’ll talk about gas fireplace performance considerations, installation and options.
